“The challenge of employee engagement is reducing the gap in perceptions between employer and employee”
As a business owner you know that managing people is a constant challenge. Getting the right people, having the capability within your team to manage the day-to-day business without your constant involvement, having the right structure in place, and dealing with performance issues, all drain your time and focus away from growing the business.
And when you finally have the right team, engagement and retention is now a major challenge for leaders. Expectations, and demands, of flexible working arrangements and all they entail is now adding to the challenges of managing your people.
Research has shown that there is definitely a ‘reality gap’ between what employees actually think about the organisation and what they want, and what the CEO and management team think the employee reality is.
One of the big drivers behind improving employee engagement is to reduce this gap in perceptions. Once you’ve taken the pulse of your team, so to speak, you can create a strategy that includes culture, capability, workplace arrangements, and retention.
Capable and engaged people are the foundations not just for growth, but they’re essential to the execution of strategy. If you want to keep growing your company, you need the right people in place and a strategy for engaging them.
Of equal importance to employers navigating all these new people challenges, is a team who will be attractive to you, and accountable to your business.
New (more flexible) terms of engagement between you and your employees need to be balanced on both sides. You need a positive employee value proposition (EVP) to attract good new people, and likewise, your team needs to positively contribute to your business.
How will you create a strategy to attract, engage and retain your best people?
It is difficult to be objective when receiving feedback from your team – positive or negative. When I work with clients to conduct an Employee Reality Check, the outcomes are always extremely positive for the business and significantly help the owner to
An Employee Reality Check will provide feedback and insights that will:
- feed into an ongoing cycle of Attract, Engage, Retain and Refresh
- help you create a positive EVP
- ensure that over time you remain relevant to existing and new team members
- identify when it may be time to consider refreshing some of your team
- provide you with insights about culture, engagement and accountability

What will shift for the better?
When you have a structured approach to managing your team and the Attract, Engage, Retain, Refresh cycle, it helps you plan for the future with more certainty.
You will be able to:
- Attract new employees more effectively
- Understand the key factors that will improve employee engagement
- Hold your team accountable to the changes you implement, based on their feedback
- Retain good talent
- Plan more easily for future resource requirements
- Develop strategies around workplace flexibility that are mutually agreeable
- Define and strengthen your company culture
How do we work together?
I follow a process outlined above, but it is not prescriptive and every single client receives individual, custom advice for their specific business.
However, before we start working together you will have a complimentary consultation to discuss your people and any challenges you are having with attracting new people, and engaging, retaining or refreshing any of your team.
If you’re comfortable that I can help you achieve your outcomes, and we both think we’d enjoy working together (very important!), then we can start.
- I will customise the Employee Reality Check to fit with any challenges you are facing and the outcomes you want for your business
- I will interview each member of your team
- You and I will have discussions all the way through the process as we progress
- At the end of the process you will receive a set of recommendations and an action plan
After that, I can leave you and your team to get on with it, or I could work with you for a period of time on an advisory basis to make the necessary actions are implemented.
